Editorial Reviews

Nine-time Grammy-winner and 2023 Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame inductee, Sheryl Crow, releases her 11th studio album, Evolution. The album comes as a welcomed surprise after Crow publicly stated that she would not release another full-length album after Threads in 2018. Evolution kicks off with the lead single "Alarm Clock," which is perhaps Sheryl Crow's most radio-friendly pop song since "Soak Up The Sun." Gold LP.

Love Sheryl, Not Broken Jewel Case
Wonderful music, as per usual!! So far only listened to first two tracks...However, the jewel case was cracked almost all the way across the back.

It took 6 subpar albums for Sheryl to finally put out the album that everyone wanted -- an album that ROCKS! As good as her first four. I can't stop listening to this album -- there's only one half-dud in the whole collection (the verses on Don't Walk Away are confusing because they lack discernable structure from cramming in too many words -- but the choruses are worth listening to!)! Mike Elizondo totally resurrected Sheryl's career, because I had written her off before this. 5-star release.

This record is proof that Sheryl was meant to continue making full-length albums! I'm so glad she's back at it! Evolution is a terrific album. There are moments that remind you of her '96 self-titled album and The Globe Sessions, with sound effects and instruments that match her 90s roots. There are also some decidedly modern numbers as well. Overall it feels like a perfect sequel to Be Myself, which is a very good thing because that album was a return to form for Sheryl. I always felt like her self-titled album and The Globe Sessions were sister albums with similar quality, sounds, and vibes... The same goes for Be Myself and Evolution.

As for the songs... The singles are of course awesome. "Alarm Clock" has a "Wouldn't Want to be like You" vibe and is instantly, addictively catchy. "Do it Again" shines with an upbeat tempo like "All I Wanna Do" or "Everyday is a Winding Road." "Evolution" has an amazing guitar solo and feels like a happier Wildflower song. But for me, it's the non-singles that are the best... Which is why I'm so happy she's making whole albums again! "Love Life" and "You Can't Change the Weather" are just simply amazing tracks. They're classic Sheryl, but they feel modern, too. They're light and airy and just make you feel good. "Broken Record" and "Waiting in the Wings" are a strong finish to an awesome, upbeat album. She's back! Not that she ever left :)

I love the CD, but I don't see the Digging in the Dirt song. Where is it?

I've been listening to this on repeat since it arrived this week! I've been a fan of Sheryl since her first album, Tuesday Night Music Club, but this is the first complete album of hers that I've bought in a few years. This is a really solid set of songs start-to-finish -- there's not a clunker on the album. The overall sound is warm, organic pop-rock, with sonic throwbacks to several of her earlier albums. Alarm Clock may be her most Top-40-friendly single since C'Mon C'Mon's Soak Up the Sun. The funky shuffle of Do It Again harkens back to Detours while the soulfulness of Love Life recalls 100 Miles from Memphis. The title track, Where?, and Don't Walk Away are more somber songs that wouldn't have been out of place on Wildflower. If you've enjoyed Sheryl Crow's music over the years, you can't go wrong with Evolution. Welcome back, Sheryl!

Maybe Sheryl Crow thought creating albums in her rear view mirror, but there still was music to be made up ahead of her. "Evolution" is her best work in years. I am not qualified to say it was her album ever; I will save that designation for her most loyal fans. However, I enjoyed every song. Her essence, personality, talent and artistry are apparent in every track. The recording is entitled "Evolution," and it is the artist's own acknowledgement of the progress she has made in her Hall of Fame career, but there is freshness in this output that makes the listener feel that one of our favorite singer / songwriter / producers has found new fuel for her creative engine. We love that about her. Thank you, Sheryl!

Sheryl Crow tricked us, didn't she? Around 2019 she announced it was unlikely she would release a new album, yet here we are in 2024 and we have "Evolution". Now, I consider myself a fan, and one that was pretty much there from the beginning, in 1994, when "All I Wanna Do" began climbing the charts and she was the new kid in town. I have bought every Sheryl Crow album the day of release since.

As per usual, I went back and listened to every Crow album in sequential order to get a feel for how she's evolved and what I feel her best/worst works were in comparison to "Evolution".

So what about, "Evolution"? Before it's release, I noted that the digital version came with the cover of Peter Gabriel's "Digging in the Dirt" (1992), whereas the physical release did not. What? I'd love to hear the reasoning behind this. So, on the date of release I simply purchased the digital download of that song and tacked it onto the end of the album when I listened to it all week this week (yes I'm back logged).

I liked "Evolution" overall. I didn't much care for "You Can Change the Weather". I felt it was the weakest track of the lot. I'm also not a huge fan of "Where?", either. The rest? Pretty good, I have to say. The best she's done in years? Well, no, not exactly. Her 2017 album, "Be Myself" was decent, as was her country turn in 2013 on "Feels Like Home". In fact, Sheryl Crow, in general, has good quality control.

The songs I liked best on "Evolution" were "Alarm Clock", "Do It Again", "Love Life", "Evolution", "Don't Walk Away", "Broken Record", and "Waiting in the Wings".

Now, I'm a huge Peter Gabriel fan (own all of his solo works, plus all Genesis). I'd love to know how it came to pass that Sheryl Crow of all people decided to cover "Digging in the Dirt" of all the Peter Gabriel songs? Makes no sense to me. Additionally, I didn't expect Peter Gabriel to join her on it, so when he kicks in during the chorus I didn't, at first, realize it was him. Interesting. Still, why? Was this necessary? I thought Crow did the song justice (as most of her covers are pretty decent like Cat Stevens' "The First Cut Is the Deepest" and Guns 'n' Roses' "Sweet Child 'O Mine"). I'm just baffled as to why she covered Gabriel, and why that song of all of his songs?

I'd like to give "Evolution" four stars, but it's more like three and a half. This is because "Evolution" plays more like a greatest hits than a push forward. I want more from Crow than just relying on her strengths. I want experimentation at this point (and she has done it in the past, just not here).

Here's how "Evolution" compares to Crow's other works:

1993 Tuesday Night Music Club: Five Stars
    1996 Sheryl Crow: Five Stars
1998 The Globe Sessions: Four Stars
    2002 C'mon C'mon: Four Stars
    2005 Wildflower: Four Stars
    2008 Detours: Five Stars
2010 100 Miles from Memphis: Three Stars
2013 Feels Like Home: Three and a Half Stars
2017 Be Myself: Three and a Half Stars
    2019 Threads: Three Stars
2024 Evolution: Three and a Half Stars
