I'm an avid music fan. I've listened to quite an array of rock and pop throughout my life and I can say without hesitation that this disc is unlike anything I've ever heard. All of BPB's work is incredibly interesting. He's taken folk and worked in blues, rock, country, all with undertones of both melancholy and joy. In my opinion, this is his definitive work, the one you MUST have if you want to get the complete Bonnie Price Billy experience. I must admit that I cannot listen to this stuff very often because it is such a strange, intense experience. Every once in a while, an artist creates something beyond his medium. Will Oldham has done that here. This is more than music.

This is one of those rare pieces of music where every single song is great! Only a few Masters can hold that record and now I know Bonnie Prince Billy is in that rare category!

Just wow! This is an absolutely beautiful recording from Start to finish. Running the gamut from, delicate, and Beautiful to moody, and dark, lyrically introspective yet universal, its tear jerking at points. This is an album that I would suggest to absolutely anyone. Records like this are rare, and should be cherished and shared. A true master work.

I slightly prefer Master and Everyone, but this was my introduction to Will Oldham's music, dour, off kilter, spare, and somber. In the right moments, this can move me like little else. Best songs: "A Minor Place", "Another Day Full of Dread", and the title track. Seems to me that despite the tone and mood he sets, their are etchings of hope in his voice and yearning.

This is probably the greatest work of one of the best (and most underrated) songwriters of the past few decades. The evocative but strangely playful treatment of death is the theme that pervades Oldham's songs, and listening to the album in its entirety can be a truly moving experience.

This isn't my favorite release of his, but this album is revered for a reason. It'll probably make you smile or cry or something.

5.0 out of 5 stars Regal Beauty
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 10, 2009
I came late to Will Oldham, but 'I See A Darkness' is a near perfect collection of acoustic singer-songwriting. It starts with the gentle nod of 'A Minor Place' which recalls the Decemberists' literacy and Neutral Milk Hotel's pronounced sense of atmosphere and place. This opening is relatively upbeat. From then on in, his gentle, forlorn tales of love, and more commonly loss, make contemporaries Iron & Wine sound playful, newcomer Bon Iver sociable.

There is an awkwardness to the spotlight, but one that is compensated for in the virtually unparalleled beauty of Oldham's craft. This is a condensing of Neil Young and Nick Drake. 'Today I Was An Evil One' allows the country influences to shine, 'Knockturne' and album closer 'Raining In Darling' are piano-led ballads to rival those of Nick Cave. But it is the title track that steals the show, an unplugged prophecy of doom of breath-taking and tear-jerking beauty equivalent to, if not surpassing, Jeff Buckley's 'Hallelujah'.

As close to perfection as is possible for the genre.
